A cat that embraces technology

I don’t know why, but when cats are entertained by something on a computer, or in this case an iPad, it is just so funny.

Too-cute little poem

I saw this at the Daily What, but they found it at Reddit, where the initial comment thread is genius.

A dog and his deer

This is so cute — a deer, adopted as a fawn by a family who found it malnourished, but managed to bottle-feed it back to health, has developed a friendly, playful attitude with the family’s dog.

According to the YouTube description:

He is free to wander if he likes and we’ve seen him with several herds of whitetail and axis deer. Apparently he fits in just fine with them. He frequently comes back to the house to eat some catfood and play with our dog, Buddy. He doesn’t care much for deer corn.

All together, now: “Awwwwww.”

Adorable boy sees a lobster for the first time

After laughing at Amy’s Tiger Woods post, I poked around a bit on the blog where it’s from (plenty of good stuff, go there!) But the one that caught my eye the most was this video, of a boy who is simultaneously entranced and frightened by the creepy-crawly lobsters that his dad has brought home for supper. So cute:

Full disclosure: Although my whole family loves lobsters, I kind of think they’re like eating gigantic bugs. And they’re extraordinarily messy. And I just don’t “get” them. They’re tasty enough, but not so delicious that they’re entirely worth the trouble, in my opinion.

Proof that taking pleasure in the destruction of things is ‘nature’ not ‘nurture’

From tdw, which notes: “I am overcome by a strong bittersweet sensation as it dawns on me that I will never again enjoy anything as much as this baby enjoys ripping paper.”

These monkeys have never had Jell-o before

Here’s a cute video of spider monkeys being given a special treat — Jell-o with blueberries inside it. Yes, apparently everyone’s grandmother now cooks for the spider monkeys at the Bronx Zoo.
According to the YouTube video description, the hidden blueberries help to stimulate the monkeys’ foraging instinct, which is kind of cool.

I wonder if that’s why my mom never put coins inside my birthday cakes when I asked. All that mumbo-jumbo about metal leaching out, I could have used a “but this will develop my foraging instinct” rejoinder.

Brian Cox, Shakespearean mentor to a toddler

I just watched the trailer for a movie called The Escapist that now I want to see.

It stars Brian Cox, and the trailer was appended to a post on HTMLGiant where the supposed purpose was this video about Cox teaching “To be or not to be” to a toddler. It’s cute.

And maybe the toddler will grow up to be the next Ian McKellan, but for right now, I think I’ll settle for Brian Cox (himself a noted King Lear) breaking out of jail.

Okay, here’s the kid:

Cute, right?

What happens when the wild animal you’re trying to photograph tries to teach you to hunt?

You get great photos, that’s what!

Amazing video from National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen, who went to Antarctica to photograph leopard seals. One of them “adopted” him and tried to teach him how to hunt penguins.

Great commercial for the SPCA

This commercial comes out of Malaysia, but I think it should be broadcast everywhere. So funny.

Kitties love doing things their way

This reminds me of my cat, but in certain ways, I think that’s because it reminds me of all cats. Simon draws based on life experience, I’m sure, but he’s managed to tap into a bit of the Platonic Ideal of catness.

I posted another one of his videos here.

Cats: you gotta love ‘em

Here’s a dose of cute to stave off the Friday blahs

Oh Maru, how you put a smile on my face.

Mostly bald cat isn’t really as ugly as they say

I first saw this story on the BBC site, here, but their video doesn’t allow for embedding on my blog. I think most of their video was taken from an original American TV report, which I found on YouTube (someone videotaped it from their TV):

There’s another video report here, with different images, but you have to watch an ad first, and I can’t embed that one either.

I’m not sure why an eight-year-old cat is suddenly getting all this attraction, except that news media are as susceptible to trends as the rest of the world.

And I don’t think the cat is all that ugly. Different-looking, sure, but I think the fur around his neck is vaguely lion’s-mane like, and it looks like he’s got a great temperament. I’d take him home.

He’s sure saddled with an awful name, though!

Newest Lithuanian sport is baby racing

In the town of Boissevain, near where I live, they used to have an annual turtle derby that was something like this. Except, you know, with turtles instead of with babies.

Still, the concept is the same — and it’s adorable!

Only one thing could make this better: even smaller, younger babies, riding these ones, with tiny saddles.

Whack-a-kitty!

It is — and isn’t — what you think.
