Two wrongs don’t make a right. That goes for dancing, apparently

Presented without comment. I pinched this from my friend Travis’ Facebook feed, but the YouTube comments say that Katy Perry tweeted it. If this is the stuff she’s searching for, stay away from her concerts.

Fairy tale, meet science

I remember, as a child, thinking that the Big Bad Wolf must have had some powerful lung action going on, if he was able to huff, and puff, and blow down houses made of straw and wood.

But perhaps he just had a vortex cannon, like Jem Stansfield does in this clip from the BBC show “Bang Goes The Theory.”

Sure, it’s not entirely true-to-life — none of the “houses” were anchored to the ground, for one thing, and the bricks looked suspiciously unstable to begin with. But you can’t argue with Jem’s excitement.

And that vortex ring looked really cool. I want one.

How is ‘Twilight’ like soccer?

One Reddit wit adds “Don’t forget all the bad acting.”

Now, let this be a lesson to all the people who don’t “get” Twitter. It is absolutely unparallelled as a method for the instantaneous transmission of pithy remarks and of-the-moment social humour.

“The Toronto public wants to shop”

See, not all people wearing anarchist’s clothing are bomb-throwing youth:

Kittens shilling ice cream

Well, I guess I’m in favour of using tiny, cute kittens in hats to sell me things.

The video is one of a sort-of series. Definitely watch this one. And then watch this one.

It’s all for Lake Street Creamery, an LA-based ice cream truck that specializes in gourmet, home-made style desserts like sorbets and gelati. And ice cream. And man, they sound yummy.

I also like their manifesto, which you should read.

Music Mondays: Florence + the Machine

I’m rather surprised I’ve never blogged about Florence + the Machine before. Grant introduced me to the English indie darling at least a year ago with the brilliantly feisty song “Girl with One Eye” from her album Lungs.

Florence is an absolute force to be reckoned with. She is fierce and bold in her style and musically fantastic. Stylistically, I guess she could be compared to Lady Gaga, but really she is just so. Much. Better.

Her song “Dog Days Are Over” is a catchy, fun, clap-your-hands sort of song, and totally showcases her incredible pipes. For more hand clappy, foot stompy songs, go to the fantastic blog I Am Fuel, You Are Friends for a mixtape of epic proportions.

But, in the meantime, here’s Florence.

Finally, a classy napkin for tucking into your collar

I literally cannot count how many times this would have come in handy. Normally, tucking a napkin into the top of your shirt kind of counts as dressing down, you know? But this simple printed piece would make it like dressing up!

You just have to remember not to do it upside-down. Or sideways.

Kittens vs dinosaurs

On the other hand, apparently dinosaurs can talk? I call this one a draw.

This just proves that things get cuter when they’re smaller

Of course, this miniature AT-AT is cute now, but when they grow up, they just lay waste to Rebel bases on Hoth.

Your guide to zombie survival

Sure, I know you’re the star of your own movie, and in zombie movies, the star almost always lives to the very end (or at least heroically gives his own life so the heroine can get away) but let’s face it: in real life, we’re all supporting actors in other peoples’ movies, too.

So, here’s what you, the average person, would really be doing during a zombie apocalypse:

What Calvin looks like to other people

Thankfully, Calvin & Hobbes is a comic strip. Because when it’s just a lonely boy talking to his stuffed tiger, well there’s nothing comic about that.

Calvin Minus Hobbes is an obvious riff on Garfield Minus Garfield, but its creator says he’s given up:

I won’t be posting any more of these. They’re too sad. If any brave soul wants to take up the project … have at it.

Photo of Ontario’s earthquake consequences

I know it’s old news, but I just read fellow bookseller Mark Lefebvre’s blog about the earthquake that rocked Ontario this past Wednesday. He includes a photo from the event that he first saw on Twitter.

As Mark puts it:

Twitter was an interesting combination of updates and info from friends all over, combined with jokes and humourous notes about it, such as the earthquake causing a tsunami in the G20 fake lake or people speculating that it wasn’t an earthquake, it was Quebec finally separating. Then a friend forwarded the same earthquake devastation picture via email.

If you are at all squeamish about the tragic consequences of the raw power of nature, I advise caution when viewing this image…

Oh, the humanity!
