Jeremy Jojola is an investigative reporter for an Albuquerque television station. As he notes on his blog, he spends a good portion of his day trying to track down scam artists.
One common scam involves people trying to hustle you into buying speakers from the back of a van, or the back of an SUV. Universally, these are drop-dead crappy speakers, but they’re billed as high-end stereo equipment. Jojola links to the White Van Speaker Scam on Wikipedia.
Then, Jojola himself was approached. Luckily, he was savvy enough to roll cell phone video:
When I lived in Toronto (and was a gullible youth), I was approached with a too-good-to-be-true offer just like this. Crappy speakers I’m sure, but the scammers are downright convincing — and fast talkers, too. Luckily, I had less than $100 in my bank account, and I guess that was less than their wholesale cost. But I literally had to go to a nearby ATM and show them my bank balance before they would leave me alone.
Good on Jojola for being quick-witted with his cell phone, and with his scam-busting sense.
