When writers of televisions shows and movies want to reference an obscure, out-of-the-way location that viewers may have heard of, they use Winnipeg.
Why? I don’t know.
Perhaps the average viewer of widely viewed entertainment (read: American) doesn’t know anything about Winnipeg. They know it’s in Canada. But what about it? That’s just it — the rest is left up to their imagination. Winnipeg is a city of mystery, full of the unknown.

I’ve always wondered if The Simpsons was guilty of this or simply satirizing it. Probably the latter, considering one (or more) of the writers are from Canada.
