It’s long been settled that there are comic books for kids, but there’s also a place for graphic novels — graphic in the sense that they include drawn images, but also graphic in the sense that they are for mature audiences.

There’s no reason that the same principle couldn’t apply to animated movies — and yet, animated movies seem to mostly be reserved for family-friendly fare.

Well, not anymore. Check out the teaser trailer for “A.D”, a CG-animated zombie thriller:

I’m a little surprised at you Grant. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were a rookie in the fine art of animation speculation. At least 10 years ago, (likely further), the Japanese were doing adult-styled “graphic” movies. Certain video stores in Winnipeg were renting them out (and I don’t mean Blockbuster-esque) at least seven years ago.

Not porn, but R-rated stuff. Of course that doesn’t mean they were good necessarily…..

Heavy Metal comes to mind, too.

Though this does look really good. And I love the music — the right amount of foreboding.

No, I know there’s been adult-oriented animations for some time — both in Japan, and as far back as, like “Fritz The Cat” in the U.S. — but I think this marks a mainstream embrace in a way that it hasn’t before. This movie shares a producer with “300″ and it was made by the same group that did “Coraline.”

Also, @Pat, the music is “Safe In Mind” by Unkle, feat. Josh Homme.
