There’s been a  lot of buzz generated over the past week or so by SarcMark.  This company has designed a new punctuation mark that aims to indicate when a sarcastic remark is made in written correspondence, primarily emails, so as to remove confusion.

With a patent application being process, this company allows this new punctuation mark to be downloaded to virtually any computer for only $1.99.

The symbol – a dot inside a single spiral line – can be installed onto any PC running Windows 7, XP or Vista, as well as Macs and Blackberry mobile devices.

While it seems like an idea whose time has come, SarcMark seems to be trying to monetize an idea that has been around for a while.  In fact, I even blogged about it some time ago.

It seems, then, that this new company is trying to create something new to replace something that already exists (if not in common usage or acceptance).  What an untapped market!

Already, I have plans in place to create replacements for the period, the comma, quotation marks, the colon, the semi-colon and the hyphen.  I leave the rest for others to exploit.

Contact me and for the low price of $5, I’ll tell you how to replace all six punctuation marks I’ve claimed.  That’s less than a dollar per mark!  Act now!  Be the envy of your friends and neighbours as you be the first on your block to use these new, exciting punctuation marks.~

(That’s called the snark.  And you don’t have to pay to use it.)
