I guess I’m on a bit of a DIY kick and a shelf kick lately. Check out these shelves made from old wooden pallets. They’d be killer if you had the right ambiance in your house:
Website design*sponge has the how-to, which is ridiculously simple. Basically, screw on a shelf, then screw it to the wall.
Pallets aren’t hard to find — I think every Home Depot just gives them away for the taking, or you can cruise behind any other big box store and grab them from near the trash compactor.
The only thing that I would add is that pallets tend to be made from really crappy cheap wood, and you could probably strengthen it substantially with some hidden angle brackets. They’re often very splintery, too, so a good sanding and varnishing would make them much more finger-friendly.
