Here’s a little something that should be knocked-off licensed and on the shelves of every hardware store in the country just in time for Father’s Day — a lamp that is made from a 100-foot extension cord, all coiled up on itself.
While I like orange as much as (more than) the next guy, remember that extension cords also come in other colours, like bright yellow or even blue.
The lamp above is the product of industrial designer Craighton Berman, and is available on his website, here. He sells completed lamps for $150, or just the lightbulb holder and the stand (ie. bring your own cord, and coil it yourself) for $75.
I also found it really interesting to peek into the creative process of this lamp’s design. On the same page where you can buy them, Berman has posted early sketches of the initial idea, plus a concept rendering. I’m really glad he did that; it’s like a behind-the-scenes thing.
He also maintains a pretty cool blog called fueledbycoffee, and by perusing it just now, I’ve found out that the coil lamp, above, was created in 2008 — and was independently re-created by a British designer, Guy Brown.
