A few weeks ago, I was waiting for my mom in the car while she went shopping, absently listening to the radio. The announcer came on and, you know, announced what was on next. I paid no attention.
Then a guitar started strumming. And a gravelly, intriguing voice started singing. By the second line, “found alternatives to honesty,” I was hooked. And I didn’t have a name. Frantically searching my car for a pen and scrap of paper I wrote down the pertinent information: Friday, July 17th, around 7:30 on cbc radio 2.
And then I promptly forgot.
Until about two days ago, it went off like a light bulb in my head. So I searched and found the artist. It was Dan Mangan, a singer from Vancouver who was performing in Ontario.
And then I promptly forgot. Again.
But then a couple of days ago I was hitting the ol’ snooze every nine minutes when this song woke me up. It was amazingly catchy, with a gravelly voice and a hand-clappy break at the end. And so familiar.
So again I took to the interwebs, searching for the cbc playlist for that morning. And wouldn’t you know it. It was Dan Mangan. The same song that caught my attention in the car woke me up. It was like it didn’t want me to forget about it. And I’ve listened to it several times since.
