Friends and co-workers will know how I feel about ‘iconic’ Canadian doughnut chain Tim Hortons (short version: I find it deplorable that we’re so desperate for a national identity that we’ll let an American corporation sell it to us, along with factory-fresh freeze-dried doughnuts and generic coffee) but for better or worse it has penetrated the national psyche.

Now, it’s also trying to penetrate the marketplace of Manhattan, having taken over a dozen Dunkin Donuts franchises in New York City. Canadian media, of course, takes notice, but I was more interested in the American view.

The New York Times even conducted a taste test. The verdict made me chuckle:

Overall: Neither chain posted a clear winner or an overall advantage in quality. Conclusion: Mass-produced doughnuts are achieving total global mediocrity.

Too true.
