The style of James Bond

bond01

Oh, to live the life of a set dresser. Just think, part of the reason that big-budget movies cost a lot of money to create is that they not only have to populate those movies with actors and actresses, but also with fictional sports teams, fictional airlines and fictional multi-nationals hell-bent on evil world domination!

And, of course, those evil multi-nationals require logos and a graphic identity all their own.

In fact, I’m sure that movie graphic design has a special ethos. Movie “companies” have to convey instant recognition to an audience that is completely unfamiliar with them. They don’t have the benefit of a soft-launch redesign.

I was enthralled by the work on display in the James Bond Logo Collection. From Pussy Galore’s Flying Circus to the Moonraker base, there’s loads of vintage Bond-abilia on display over there.

It’s not just the big stuff, either, there’s a lot of attention to the small details in the films, like signage stenciled on boxes, fake tools or the James Bond monogram, above.

Check out the Zorin Industries blimp!

Someone got to design that — and got to have a lot of fun with it! Way more good stuff at the site.
