You gotta admit, she looks hot.
There’s a quote from an early episode of the Simpsons where Homer is at a candy show and a character points out the Gummi Venus de Milo, “crafted by artisans that work exclusively in the medium of the gummi.”
For some reason that quote has always stuck with me. Today, it came back to me again as I cleaned out the flotsam and jetsam in my bookmarks — there are some really cool pieces of art that have been crafted in what I will hazard to call “non-traditional” media.
My first example is the weakest: Photoshop. If I had the time and the patience, I would love to become proficient in using this program. The real artists out there can do amazing things with this program, and many of them are willing to share through free online tutorials. Like this, for example. The manipulation of flame onto a standard photo? Awesome.
Lego, one of the greatest toys ever invented, in the properly skilled hands become bone fide pieces of art. Certainly far beyond any of the spaceships I ever constructed.
Finally, even a dirty car can become a canvas at the hands of an artisan. Me? I can barely scrawl “wash me” legibly…
Never again will I scoff at someone who claims they are creating art as they toil away with whatever scraps of garbage they have at hand. Maybe they will have found their muse and another new way to bring beauty into the world.
That’s a lie. I’ll scoff.
